Dear Gary Hustwit,
I find myself continually returning to your documentaries to refresh my outlook on conscious, thoughtful design. I am not a designer or an urban planner, though I have a significant interest in both areas. In particular, Urbanized has really helped shape my outlook on the modern city and sustainable urban growth.
I checked out your current project documenting former Olympic cities. Hosting the Olympics is a massive undertaking especially from an infrastructural point of view. Does it really pay offfor these cities in the end? From your few pictures on online, it looks like these areas often fall on hard times after the games. I’ve been to to the Olympic Village in Munich and it seemed alright but nothing special either.
So how do you think the $50 billion spent in Sochi will play out 20 years from now? Maybe the world’s most expensive prison complex? Time will tell.
